A Mario Party that's stripped back and that doesn't have to rely on gimmicks is a good reminder of what made the franchise so popular in the first place. Then again, maybe a safe Mario Party is exactly what we needed. Perhaps that feeling could have been offset slightly if the package was a little more generous by including a couple more classic boards and characters. It doesn't take risks and avoids trying to advance the franchise in a meaningful way. What's included is great fun, but there's not much that's imaginative or surprising. If there is a slight drawback with Mario Party Superstars, it's that the game plays it considerably safe. By comparison, Super Mario Party can boast 2 vs 2, co-operative, and rhythm-based modes, plus more. This is a game that is likely to be most appreciated by longtime fans.Īlso worth noting is the fact that Mario Party Superstars doesn't offer alternative ways to play beyond the board game and minigame modes. You're even asked to name your favourite Mario Party game and minigames when you set up your profile card. Outside of the game modes, you can unlock music tracks from past games and collect short encyclopedia entries looking back at the history of the series. Chance Time spaces make their return, throwing in the possibility of more randomness for good measure, while the absence of Super Mario Party's character dice blocks means strategies are mostly based on which items you pick up and how you use them. The game leans closer to the Nintendo 64 releases in the way it plays, with the more interesting boards providing that little bit of extra unpredictability seasoned players will associate with the franchise. In fact, when you start a new game, Koopa Troopa briefly reminisces and gives a nod to the board's history. Meanwhile, all five of the colourful and vibrant boards here are borrowed from Mario Party 1-3, from Peach's Birthday Cake to Space Land. All 100 minigames are taken from the first ten core games in the series, with a particularly heavy emphasis on the earlier entries. The play on nostalgia couldn't be more obvious. ![]()
